Spanish Film Festival

Hi Ladies,

Is this an omen, is someone trying to tell us we should all be going on a pilgrimage to Spain???? Who has their walking boots ready?
I took Benny for a big walk this afternoon.
I loved the book launch and thought that Ailsa was just lovely, it was quite thought provoking, her blog is worth looking into, I know Babs has already checked it out . It might be of special interest to you Merryn as she mentions that she will be in Sydney later this month, you could mention if you go to see her that The Breakfast at Tiffanies Bookclub was at Aziza's.

Who is up for going to see a Spanish movie during the festival?  The one on the 5th sounds pretty cool, or should I say hot and spicy, especially by then most of us will have read some of Shades of Grey .
I also think it would be great to come along to our next meeting with a new word in Spanish, why not , let's broaden our horizons!!!!

Will send out more details re meeting etc soon

Audrey xx

AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT
The gorgeous Salma Hayek stars in this riveting satire about an out of work advertising executive who inadvertently becomes an overnight news phenomenon when an accident puts him in mortal danger. From his life-threatening predicament, Roberto (Jose Mota) seizes the opportunity as a chance to sell his story to the highest bidder and provide for his family. Engrossing at every turn, maverick Spanish filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia’s film is a biting satire about the machinations of today’s sensation-hungry media. Seamlessly moving between drama and black comedy, the heart of the film lies in the pitch-perfect performances from Mota, in his big-screen debut, and the always brilliant Hayek.

ELENA [M] Advance Screenings this weekend
Join us at advance screenings of ELENA [M] this weekend at Palace Balwyn, Brighton Bay, Cinema Como and Kino Cinemas.
The winner of the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize at Cannes 2011, the new film from Russian maestro Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return) is a taut & engrossing moral tale of loyalties, familial ties, and a coveted inheritance.
Middle-aged couple Elena (Nadezhda Markina) and Vladimir (Andrey Smirnov), come from different walks of society. He is a well-off businessman; she is a former medical worker, now a housewife. Having met late in life, each has children from previous marriages. Elena’s son is unemployed and constantly asking for money. Vladimir’s daughter is a careless young woman whose contact with her father is irregular and strained. Their worlds rupture when a heart attack puts Vladimir in hospital and he makes a significant decision: his daughter will be the only heiress of his wealth. The shy and submissive Elena’s hopes of helping her son and grandchildren secure a better life are crushed, triggering a desperate plan…
With ELENA, Zvyagintsev conjures a riveting and uncompromising vision of a Russia in moral disarray, and a masterful insight into human nature.

When Margot learns that Daniel lives across the street from them, the certainty about her domestic life shatters. She and Daniel steal moments throughout the steaming Toronto summer, their eroticism heightened by their restraint.
Swelteringly hot, bright and colorful like a bowl of fruit, TAKE THIS WALTZ leads us, laughing, through the familiar, but uncharted question of what long‐term relationships do to love, sex, and our images of ourselves. It's a funny, bittersweet tale of love. Director Sarah Polley (Away From Her) has created a sensual film, full of moments oscillating between joy and comedy and heartbreak.

BRAVE [PG] 3D - Advance Previews this weekend
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.
Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin(voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Held at Davey's Frankston,
Apologies Jules, Leonie

Sarah has formally handed in her resignation, all of you should have received her email, sorry to see you go Sarah, we did have a few laughs especially your initiation  night when you looked likeJoanne!!!! you are more than welcome to be a guest at anytime you feel the urge.

We had a lovely evening around the round table, the meals were delicious and the conversation lively as ever. There were a few tales told of family history, Jayne shared a very sweet story and of course Susie has a Lady Bousie in her family Tree.

General Business:

Sarah's resignation brought to the table the discussion of a new member to make it an even 10 again.
Our next official meeting will be held in July as we have the book launch on Wednesday the 13th at Aziza, PLEASE  let me know if you are not attending as I have confirmed numbers with Jo already.

We will make our next official meeting  a bring along a guest night and we will have a democratic vote as to who we want to join from the guests.
Jayne is the hostess and has suggested a great wine bar in Gardenvale as the venue for a Friday night, sounds fun.
The date is Friday 20th of July, she will get back to me with the finer details.
The book title is 50 Shades of Grey ( a raunchy read I believe!!!) Leonie has already read it a few times!!!!
Deb you might have to buy to take away with you.

Jayne has sent through an email re purchasing the book from Fishpond for around $10, I have already ordered my copy
The erotica novel, "Fifty Shades of Grey" has taken the world by storm. E.L. James' best-selling BDSM novel is a far better and greater opponent to that of Paulo Coelho's "Eleven Minutes" when it comes to S&M and all things sexually wild.

A few other titles you may like to look into are:

 Cafe Scheherazade.by Arnold Zables.
Good Living Street by Tim Bonyhady
Growing Old Outrageously by below

LIKE a fine wine and a good book, some things just get better with age, just ask Randwick’s Hilary Linstead.
Australia’s first theatrical agent, who fled England chasing both a bloke and the dream of becoming an actress (neither of which materialised), has filled her life with bright lights, divas and plenty of adventure.
Linstead packaged shows, including Tap Dogs, and threw her hat into film production. Her credits include Heatwave, Molly (the singing Dog) and Bootmen. But the next chapter of her life began when she reconnected with an old school friend from England, Liz Davies, after 35 years. Both shared a determination to venture outside their comfort zone and put the revelry back into retirement.
The pair embarked on a series of extended holidays and have been circumnavigating the globe ever since, taking in sights such as the Atlas Mountains in North Africa and safaris in South Africa as well as several music festivals in Naples and Prague.
The thrills and spills from their many colourful adventures is encapsulated in their book Growing Old Outrageously - a celebration of friendship and laughter. Available from Allen and Unwin.  Looks Gorgeous doesn't it??
Deb is off on her trip overseas this week, Have a fabbo time

See you all at the Book Launch

Sinning Across Spain
Piper, Ailsa

enlarge image save image print page add this

Sinning Across Spain is the story of Ailsa Piper's 1300 kilometre walk from the southern city of Granada to Galicia, "the bathtub of Spain", in the far northwest, carrying an unusual cargo. Aside from 10 kilograms of practicalities, she also lugged a load of sins in her swag.
In the tradition of medieval believers, or scammers, who paid others to carry their sins to holy places, and so buy forgiveness, Ailsa asked her colleagues and friends to donate a sin. She then shouldered them across country, being taunted and tempted by them along the way, and trying to discover the mysteries of faith. What is faith? Did she have it? Could she get it? Would she know it if she saw it?
Sinning across Spain celebrates the call of the road, the possibilities for connection, and the simple act of putting one foot

Hi ladies, sorry for the delay with newsletter, Audrey has been under the pump arranging a wedding and then ending up full of the flu!!!!!!

We all huddled up in a booth at the hotel, quite cosy and a great setting for a meeting, most of us enjoying their very tasty Tapas menu. I must say that I thought it was one of our better discussions on a book title, I think the added pressure of having to write a review created a bit more interest. All in all great reviews by everyone, we actually sound quite professional!!
LOL at Deb regaling us with stories of her childhood toy Boodie, you had to be there, then the moment when she was leaving and Gaye very innocently asked  ,Deb is that your bra? Again you had to be there!!

Book Reviewed was Gold by Chris Cleave, see attached reviews, I have attached info on his other titles which you may feel inclined to read after reading Gold.Jill has read Littel Bee and said it was excellent.

As we had an interrupted reading schedule we still have to complete Lovesong by Alex Miller ( some of you have completed already) which will discuss at our next meeting, along with other title The Paris Wife

The Paris Wife

THE PARIS WIFE

The New York Times Bestseller
Set during a remarkable time, the same period as Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast and The Sun Also Rises, Paula McLain's The Paris Wife brilliantly captures the voice and heart of Hadley Hemingway as she struggles with her roles as a woman—wife, lover, muse, friend, and mother—and tries to find her place in the intoxicating and tumultuous world of Paris in the twenties.
"This absorbing, illuminating book gives us an intimate view of a sympathetic and perceptive woman, the striving writer she married, the glittering and wounding Paris circle they were part of, and the challenges of trying to preserve love and domesticity in the face of rising celebrity and ruthless ambition."
General Business:
As it was such a success writing the reviews it was decided that it would become a regular occurrence with everyone submitting a review to Audrey to be added to the next newsletter.
We will call it             In Your Words
Bring along a toy or something special from your childhood to the next meeting at Bousie's, this was propmted by Deb's stories about Boodie( who I might add was kidnapped over the weekend but returned home safely to his mummy!!!)

                                                        February 2012
Held at Higginbotham Winery on 12/2
Apologies Susan and Jayne

A lovely rustic setting for our first meeting of the year, I feel very remiss though as we forgot to celebrate that it was our

2nd  birthday, we will have to make up for it at our next meeting, look out Bousie!!!!

We did eventually get ourselves settled after deciding it would be too noisy near the band to hear our conversations, can you believe we thought they would be too noisy...... indeed.
Audrey spotted a bit of eye candy that seemed to keep walking past making it very difficult for her to maintain order.
OMG Audrey was in love with the beaurtiful big Clydesdale who was in the paddock outside

BOOK REVIEW:
Book reviewed was Tuscan Rose

A story that also presented us with some historical content, it was enjoyed by most, Jules was not too keen , it was a bit too bleak for her, I myself really enjoyed it, enough to want to read another title.
A bit more padding out of characters was a suggestion.

Overall rating was 7 out of 10.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

Gaye has been nominated the knitting guru so if you are still feeling inclined to do some knitting of squares for charity then contact Gaye if you have forgotten the instructions.

Patrick-- We will continue to collect goodies on a monthly basis for Patrick to make hampers as we get enough stock, thanks Gaye for your last contribution.

We will also be starting to collect again on a monthly basis for our charity pick at the end of the year. Leonie if you still want to put your hand up as treasurer , if not let me know and we can handover to someone else.

Jill and I had a little venture down to Loch and had an encounter with the publican of the local pub, thought it would be a great venue for a Bookclub weekend away, Sybil the ownere is a member of a Bookclub too, there are books scattered throughout the hotel. She ahs given us an outline of what it would cost for a nights accommodation with dinner, it would work out to around $108 per head for dinner, breakfast and inc acc. i would love to hear your thoughts for a weekend later in the year.

Next Meeting:

20th March to be held at Julia's
